From long ago when you had to paint your own miniatures, before religious parent groups crusaded against Dave Arneson, Gary Gygax and TSR, here are some free resources for getting started with Role Playing Games. Included are GURPS, Steve Jackson’s Generic Universal Role Playing System, a d6-based (“d” stands for dice, the 6 is the range of numbers it can randomly generate) open platform for any genre, and also 1st Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. This is the original version, more enjoyable, far easier and much less politically correct than the 2nd and subsequent editions. Sci Fi-Fantasy Blog invites you to play as a Half-Orc Assassin/Magic User and roll off the Arduin Critical Hit Chart (The Arduin Grimoire Volume 1, pg. 34) when you throw a natural 20 fighting a devil or demon. Dungeon Masters, try placing a lightsabre (AD&D / Sci Fi Conversion Manual, pg.12) inside the slain devil’s treasure chest for added interest.
P.S.
Sci Fi-Fantasy Blog hoists it’s stein to Dave Hargrave, author of the Arduin Grimoire. Another hoist to Frank and Stephanie Kaehler and their sons Jason and Adrian, who ran Game Alot in Santa Cruz, California from 1980- 2013.
